Getting Started with Qlikview

You can download the free 15 days evaluation version from

http://www.qlikview.com/download.htm

Installation is simple is quick without any configration.
Open Qlikview from the start menu.
Go to file – New to create an application. Save it.

This is how the interface will look like.

There are two types of options for relational databases. OLEDB and ODBC.Create a DSN and reference it Here. However you can create the DSN from Here also.

I have already created a DSN ‘SH’ and after selecting provide the username and password. Click on OK. A connection string will automatically appear on the screen.

Now click on Select button.

Select the correct owner. The table and columns available will appear.

Select the table required and columns. To select more than one table use ADD button.

Select table and click ADD. Again select another table and click ADD and so on.

Also check the Preceding load button just above add button.

You can see the script generated on the left pane.

Click on OK once completed.

The scipt will appear like this.

Save the application and click on Debug to see the effects. The fields with the same name will be joined automatically. Lets see the results.

Check limited load and let the rows be 10 only.

Click on Run button.

The script is run and finished. Click close. The fields will appear like this.

Click on OK. And save the application.

Click Ctrl+T. The relations will appear like this.

This relation is perfect hence no need to change any joins. Click on OK.

Now we will reload the application with complete data. Click on Reload button which is next to the edit script button. After reload is complete click on OK and save the application.

Now we Will try to create a sample report of country wise sales.

Right click on the window . Select New sheet object- chart.

Give window Title as Country Sales. Select the type of chart. This time let it be bar chart only. Click on Next.

Select Country Name as the Dimension.

Click on Next

Write this expression as shown.

Click on OK

Click on Finish to see the Raw report.
Now there are lot of options available to make it look more relevant and beautiful. But your report is made. With some few more changes it will look like this.
Play with it. Its a wonderful tool and you can make quick reports out of it.

Good Luck.

Hi Bhushan,

The joins can be modified in the script part only. Qlikview creates a join when it identifies two column names with the same name. If you do not want it to create a join with column with the same name just change the name of the column or vice a versa.
You can run a SQL script representing a view and it will load the view data to the Qlikview file.
2. Qlikview has some ETL capabilities but understand the target of this Qlikview ETL is Qlikview document only. You can perform some basic transformations also.

Thanks alot Manohar ...

Going step ahead i am in process of designing Recency-Freqency-Monitoring module in Qlikview for my retail Analytics. So i am getting few difficulties here like 1) how to get top 30% member revenue contibution ?
2) Frequency of visits for members regitered in particular month ?
3) How to script Registered dates & transaction date so that they both can be added in filter ?

I know these are bit heavy stuff which i working on, so your inputs will be big boon for me.

Hi,

Janisoft- I am obliged. Thanks.

Bhushan-
1. if you mean revenue contributed by top 30% members- Create a report for member wise revenue. Sort the results in desending order. Find out the number for 30% members which would be 0.03*(total distinct count of members).
Limit the sorted results displayed by the report to this number.

2. create a report monthwise members joined. Your dimension will be Month(extracted from the member registration date feild) and measure would be count of members.
3. I did not understand the third question.

Hi Manohar,

Thanks for posting some gud articles on QlikView they are really very helpful for the beginners like us. Could you please answer the following question

Can you please post some FAQ's on QlikView, as well.

Hi Manohar ,

I am back again.

Thanks for your inputs.

With trial version & docs, we able to create Retail Suite for my Client servicing team. We have pull all data in text format & then format those in Qlikview .Pulling data in Text format is very simple & easy way i feel to go ahead in Qlikview.

Very recently we presented this to our COO & he is fine with our analytics through Qlikview.

So now we are very much looking into buying this tool.

We already plan for some advance analysis like product Adjacent analysis , Basket analysis , Demgraphics , Regression , Decile Reporting , RFM etc.

So this is the way we are proceeding in QV .

Thanks to people like you who are giving helping hands to others for coping up New tech at rocket speed.

Will definitely update these tricks & tips during the course of development of these analysis.

Nani- The syntax for creating QVD is:
Store Tablename into filepath\Tablename.qvd;
for example:
SampleTab:
select a,b from table;
Store SampleTab into C:\Sampletab.qvd;
Hope this would help.

Bhushan- I appreciate your comments. Thank You.
